Я использую следующее,

<div id='message' style="display: none;">
  <span></span>
 <a href="#" class="close-notify">X</a>
</div>

Теперь я хочу найти пролет внутри div и назначить ему текст...

    $("#message").fadeIn("slow");

Попробуйте следующее:

$("#message span").text("hello world!");
